Messerschmitt Bf 109F (Revell Classics Ltd.Edition) The original project of the light weight fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109 dates back to the year 1934. In early 1940, Messerschmitt started a thorough revision of the Bf 109E in order to provide fighter units near The Channel with an aircraft superior to the Spitfire. Compared tot the 'Emil' the new 'Fritz' offered an increase in top speed of 65 km/h. The DB 601 N with state-of-the-art fuel injection and single stage compressor gave the new 109 superior flying capabilities at medium altitudes. The only unit on the English Channel, JG 51 received some of the first Bf 109F-1 in October 1940. Besides Hans-Joachim Marseille, major Werner Mölders, commanding JG 51 since the end of July, also was one the most famous pilots on Bf 109F. Until the arrival of the Spitfire Mk.V the 'Friedrich' was clearly superior. A total of 2400 copies of the Bf 109 were built until 1942.
